Since we enjoyed the Home Chef shrimp taco meal kit, here’s one with steak that we made in September. This one seems pretty feasible to make without the convenience of the kit, but these always make life a little bit easier, right?
The ingredients:
- 1 Shallot
- ¼ oz. Cilantro
- 1 Jalapeño Pepper
- 1 Lime
- 1 Roma Tomato
- 10 oz. Steak Strips
- 2 oz. Sour Cream
- 1 Tbsp. Chile and Cumin Rub
- 2 oz. Queso Fresco
- 6 Small Flour Tortillas
Price:
I think it’s a pretty fair price. Although, who wouldn’t want some more meat!? Always.
This meal kit took a little longer with all the mincing and cutting of the veggies. I blame the shallot and me trying to cut up the jalapeño into small pieces!
I combined 1/4 of the shallot in with the cut up jalapeño and used as much of the lime juice that I could squeeze with all my might into the bowl for them to “pickle” until a certain amount of time.
I love whenever the steak is already pre-cut into these thin strips! So much more convenient. I wish they were pre-cut like this in stores. If they are, I haven’t seen them, but if only! I just had to pat it down dry since there was a lot of excess juice in the packet.
While I put it on the stove to cook, I mixed the sour cream packets, cilantro, and some olive oil to fluff on the tacos.
Can’t really tell as much from the picture, but once the beef was browned, I tossed in the remaining shallot and the diced tomato. They cooked for a few minutes longer to soften them both.
It’s funny, for this meal kit, it told us to pan fry the tortilla for a minute or so. The shrimp meal kit said to just heat them up in the microwave. These turned out much better, but you already knew that, right?
Much, much better. The six tortillas were stored in their warm little environment until it was time to assemble.
Now that the tomato looks like a mushy mess due to me scrambling them around, I then poured in the water and seasoning packet. I was supposed to let the mix cook until the water evaporated.
Here’s my somewhat portioned out taco. Yum, I pretty much inhaled it, haha.
I attempted to have a better angled shot. They look like they don’t have much in them, but it was an adequate amount for my liking.
Plus, we don’t really know how to portion out our tacos well enough for six, so you can see where most of the meat went on somebody’s taco!
Taste: Love, love the steak strips and the mix as a whole. We’re not huge sour cream fans, but since it was in the mix of the pickled veggies, it had a slightly spicy, but nice flavor with the herbs and lime juice. The seasoning mix retained its flavor for the meat, so the meat wasn’t dried out as the seasoning cooked until it evaporated. I’m not a huge fan of tomatoes, but they went well with the mix.

The directions said to hollow out the jalapeños, so it just had a slight kick to them.
This was definitely a fulfilling meal kit. I could barely eat all three, so I made Stephen eat the last of mine!
Is the Barbacoa Steak Tacos Home Chef Meal Kit Worth It?
This meal kit, I probably buy again because it was super simple to make. If you eat more than 3 of these tacos, then it won’t fill you up. For us, it was a perfect amount! I thought this kit was worth it despite the amount of prepping and cutting required — and it takes a lot for a rookie like me to cut up all the veggies.
What type of meat do you prefer in your tacos? Definitely beef [or maybe shrimp more]. I think I liked this beef kit better than the shrimp taco meal kit!
Enjoy the rest of your week, friends!
Mmm, you know, I’m not biggest fan of sour cream either but, that mix looks & sounds so amazing. I LOL’d at the part about the tomatoes looking a mushy mess. 😂 I think different chefs contribute their recipes to Home Chef, that’s why the tortillas were prepared differently. Definitely prefer in a pan, too! The finished tacos turned our so well! *Someone* really did get all the meat, hahaha.
It’s such an odd taste that you don’t know if you really like it or not, yeah? Haha. I can handle it in small doses, but my family loves to pack it on their meals!
I’m glad you got a laugh out of that! I try to be candid and transparent with my cooking, no matter how it looks! 🤷🏻♀️ He’ll take the meat and I’ll grab the veggies, so it works out in the end! Thanks for reading and catching up! ☺️
Boyfriend really likes sour cream, too. Bleh, lol, it does have an odd taste but works well with some stuff, huh?
It’s really fun reading through your cooking process 🙂 love that you’re candid & transparent about it. You two are perfect for each other! <3
Who knew how an interesting item could make some things taste better! My family likes sour cream in their chili, but no way for me, haha.
Thank you for reading these posts! I appreciate it so much, and I love reading about your relationship with you and your boyfriend! It makes me so happy to see what you all are up to! ☺️
I never liked sour cream on my chili either, always hated it at Chipotle, too but, I love that dill sour cream dip with potato chips & putting a little on a baked potato. 🙂
I could say the exact same to you! Love reading about what you & Stephen are up to! <3
