Food with My Dude #18: Death By Chocolate

In just a blink of an eye, next week is Christmas! No idea how that happened, but as promised, here’s the simple Death By Chocolate recipe that my mom makes a few times a year.

Also, disclaimer for this post: I made it with Haley instead because Stephen was eating his Pad Thai from Thai Cuisine once we got to Kingsport the day before Thanksgiving.

I let Haley gather the ingredients while I stuffed my face with summer rolls, haha. Well, she gathered a few of them for the picture, so this post may seem a bit more scattered.

Ingredients:

  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/3 cup of of vegetable oil
  • Heath candy
  • 1 large chocolate Jello-O box or 2 small ones
  • 2 Cool Whips
  • milk

Milk and one of the Cool Whip containers are pictured later on.

The first few ingredients may vary, depending on the cake mix you buy, but this is what my mom uses a lot.

Price:

$$

*Side note: WordPress is being funky and apparently I can’t edit or copy my paragraphs. It seems like the old price range isn’t available anymore and it won’t let me put the yellow cash symbol in the same block as Price, so it has to look like that for the time being. [Now that I’m looking, my little pepper that I used for spicy dishes isn’t available for me to use for the heat level anymore! I’m sad and outraged at the moment.] Update: I could manage

First, you simply bake the cake as the directions instruct you to do so.

We set the oven to 325 degrees since we used a glass container. Evidently I didn’t take a picture of its mixture prior to going into the oven, I apologize for that as well, but we left it in the oven for 35 minutes.

What makes this dessert take so long is it has to completely cool prior to transferring it into the final dessert container.

Whenever your cake has an hour or so to cool off, we then mix the pudding to start layering it!

Have your two containers of Cool Whip nearby as well.

Whatever container you choose to use, cut up the cake into squares.

Place half of it in your desired dessert container.

Fair warning: The pudding sets up quickly, so make sure it’s mixed well before pouring half of it on your cake! As you can see from the picture, the pudding had already set by the time we struggled to pour it evenly onto the cake, oops.

Then, use one of the Cool Whips and evenly layer it on the cake/pudding mixture.

Then, you can eyeball the amount of Heath crumbs to pour over the cool whip. Be generous and sprinkle it on!

And Repeat!

As before, put the remaining cake in the dish, pour [or scoop out] the pudding.

Layer with the lovely fluff. Spoon out whatever else you can from the container and enjoy it!

Then, generously pour the last layer of Heath crumbs.

This is the pretty presentation that you get once you’re finished! We tried, didn’t we? I do think the cake and pudding are supposed to have a slightly different outcome since the pudding can/should be in a somewhat liquid state when pouring, but that’s pretty minor.

Taste: You know, I haven’t had it in a few years, so my taste buds have probably changed on how I feel on this dish, so I’ll get back to that. Before, I thought this dish was too chocolatey for me to like. But if you like lots and lots of chocolate, this dish is pretty easy and straightforward to make. Plus, the Heath bits give the dessert a nice crunch to it!

Rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I’m taking the rating into my family’s liking and my mixed feelings about it to try it again soon, because you just never know, yeah?

Heat level:

N/A, 0

As you can see, it’s not a complicated dessert and my family really looks forward to having it during the holidays or special events. I’m sure you can substitute and alter the dish in many ways, especially if you aren’t a fan of the Heath candy or any other the other ingredients.

This is a pretty short post, but I hope you like the dish if you’re wanting to put yourself in a chocolate coma for Christmas!

When does chocolate become too much chocolate for you?

I’m not the biggest or craziest fan of chocolate, so I have to take mine in doses when I get a craving for it. I stay away from double chocolate anything since it’s too rich for me — but I could probably eat my weight in Ferrero Rocher, and that’s completely different, right? Haha. I guess it depends on the chocolate that we’re talking about.

Anyways, I’ll try to make a post before Christmas to officially catch up to present day and read more of what everyone else is up to. I still lack some gifts and presents to wrap, so that’s what I’m planning to do within the next few days!

What are some of your weekend plans?

Stay warm and have a lovely rest of the week!

  1. I actually didn’t know your price range & spicy pepper symbol were WordPress features? I thought you were using emojis! I hope they come back & you are able to use them properly again!

This dessert looks absolutely outrageous & so fun to make. I LOVE Heath candy bars so much but, haven’t had one in so long! Chocolate becomes a bit too much for me if it’s just solid– like it has no nuts, fruit, toffee etc. & I also used to hate it completely as a kiddo!

I feel kbad I didn’t get to read this before sending your gift. ๐Ÿ˜ญ I didn’t know you weren’t a huge fan of chocolate!

    1. All WordPress plugins to use for those! Mineโ€™s been acting funny and wonโ€™t let me edit a whole paragraph, and deletes it if Iโ€™m not careful. I have no idea why, but it needs to get it together!

Your view on chocolate is how I view things too! Donโ€™t feel bad at all! I loved the chocolate you got for me; I have like 3 squares left of it because itโ€™s addicting! If itโ€™s solid chocolate without anything else is what I mean; but you did so well and I loved my gift! I was going to get you chocolate too, but couldnโ€™t remember what you liked and I overthought it ๐Ÿ˜‚

      1. OH MY GOSH, that was happening to me, too. I switched to the Classic Editor because of it. I don’t think I can do WordPress plugins on the Personal plan though, sadly. ๐Ÿ™

Oh my gosh, okay, good. I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed the chocolate I sent you. <3 I loved the gift you sent me, too! & that's okay. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I am mostly a dark chocolate with nuts or something kinda gal!

        1. I didn’t know how to switch to the Classic Editor after already typing up the post, but it looks like it’s working and can let me copy and paste the widget things — for now! I’m just making a draft template to copy and paste in new posts, so hopefully that’s easier! I looked today and they used to be in the Jetpack section of where you edit a new block because that’s where they used to be, but now they’re gone!

I absolutely enjoyed it! It’s all gone now, so I’ll have to look for more! Also, I will note that for future references! ๐Ÿ˜

          1. Lol oh woohoo, happy it’s working much better now. ๐Ÿ™‚ I don’t think I will switch back to the Block Editor anymore for awhile though. What a bummer those options aren’t available! Hopefully they’ll return soon!

<3 I got the chocolate from Sprouts but, I am pretty sure they sell the brand everywhere you can find chocolate bars!

          2. Thereโ€™s a Sprouts right beside a coffee shop I love, but I havenโ€™t actually went in it! Iโ€™ll have to do that soon!

  2. Oh wow this is definitely easy and looks pretty good! Chocolate can be too much of a thing for me too so I have be very careful.
Thanks for sharing the recipe with us because when I commented I didn’t know the desserts in your other post, well this one pretty much clears it up lol

    1. I never realized how simple it was to make! It seems like an uncommon dessert, and no problem! There are so many desserts that it’s hard to keep track of them sometimes, haha.

Do you have anything to add?
