I’m going to jump back a couple of months ago to June, when I first had the idea of this series and in my early documentation stages. For funsies and new recipe ideas, Stephen and I have into the Home Chef meal kit offered at Kroger. We buy new ones to try every now and then, so I’m gonna taco ’bout it. Sorry, I just had to!
Cajun Shrimp Tacos
Honestly, I was pretty surprised by the tacos. So now, I look forward to going to Kroger and seeing the variety of kits to choose from. We’ve found some others winners that we’ve made that I’ll share with you in the future!
The only thing I’m not too fond about these meals is that since these are delivered to the store, I don’t know how long they’ve been in the display. It’s a minor thing, but we purchased this kit on 6/23 and it says it was good until 6/24 – just cutting it close a bit.
We bought and cooked the meal kit that day and the bell pepper was on the verge of going bad and wasn’t as crisp. The shallot had a small place on it, too, but I cut it off and it didn’t make a huge difference.
Ingredients:
- 3 oz. Corn Kernels
- 1 Lime
- 1 Green Bell Pepper
- 1 Shallot
- 8 oz. Shrimp
- 2 tsp. Cajun Seasoning
- 4 oz. Slaw Mix
- 2 oz. Sour Cream
- 6 Small Flour Tortillas
- ½ oz. Crispy Jalapeños
Price:
I mean, for the amount that you get for 6 tacos, I wouldn’t say the price is too horrible to pay $18.99 for it, but I guess it is slightly pricey when I think about it since most of the items are inexpensive. Really, the shrimp what ups the price so much if you were to buy in bulk! Either way, super simple and easy to mimic if you choose to buy the ingredients separately!
Just to note: our final taco product didn’t look at all like the picture, but don’t discount the taste by our presentation of them!
I think I like eating soft shell tacos better, for the most part. I cut the lime, shallot, and pepper – it was still good, but just a little wilted and not as crispy.
Stephen took care of the stove and the initial cooking.
We stirred the slaw mix, sour cream, and half the lime juice together in a bowl. Here’s a blurry action shot of Stephen stirring in action while I peered over his shoulder, haha. Like I said, early time when he was as on board of me making him pause for a quick picture!
I patted the shrimp as dry as I could with a paper towel. Then, I stirred the cajun mix to coat the shrimp and then had it cook in the skillet.
Once the shrimp was cooked, we set them to the side and cooked the bell pepper and shallot together. Once they were cooked well, we put the shrimp back and let the mix cook for a tad bit longer.
We had to microwave the 6 tortillas that came with the kit in the microwave with a damp paper towel over it to warm them up.
Since there were about 20 shrimp to split for 6 tacos, all of them had 3 shrimp inside them, other than the 2 tacos that had 4.
Here’s the final product:
The shrimps were a good size for the taco. It was questionable whether I think 3 shrimps per taco were actually an adequate amount, but with the mix of the slaw, it was the perfect amount.
Taste: The shrimp had a wonderful flavor to them and I actually enjoyed the slaw mix of it. The taco doesn’t look like much, but it was definitely better than what the picture showed! Stephen and I underestimated how much slaw to put on our tacos, so we were pretty skimpy on the first few tacos. So, the last taco was about 75% slaw mix! That was bad estimation on our part, haha.

Heat level:
We loved the spice level of this meal kit, and were shockingly impressed by it. I could have eaten the jalapeño crunchies alone, so good! I think after the second or so taco, the spice really kicked in for Stephen, but we had a lot of slaw left, so I’m sure it offset the level of it for him!
Maybe I’ll actually have to try some shrimp tacos in restaurants, but I don’t want to make a mess of myself eating them in public, so maybe I’ll just stick with the Home Chef meal kit, haha.
Is the Cajun Shrimp Tacos Home Chef meal kit worth it?
Although I believe that there should be at least two more shrimps for the kit because, I thought that this was a really good recipe to make!
Um, yum??! I have thought about trying Home Chef or other meal prep kits for a while now but never really made the leap. I guess I am always thinking about how I could make it cheaper BUT lately I have been considering just biting the bullet and trying something like that when work gets crazy. Anywho, those tacos look amazing! Hope you are enjoying your labor day weekend 🙂
I think I really underestimated shrimp tacos because they were a lot bette than I gave them credit for! And I know what you mean. I needed new recipes rather than going out to eat and spend a lot more, but some of the meals are worth the price I think! Maybe you can try one and see how quick and simple it is to make for your hectic days😊
Thank you, Brittany! Mines going great, and I hope your weekend is going fantastic!
I freaking love shrimp tacos holy moly! I only wished you put in more shrimps in each taco HAHAHA! So freaking good though my gosh now I’m legit craving for it shiiiit!
I sure wish the kit came with more shrimp, who doesn’t need more!? Awh, I’m sorry! Go get you some shrimp tacos asap!!
Oh how fun! Boyfriend subscribed to quite a few meal plans back in the day & Homechef was one of our faves. I didn’t know you could buy them from the grocery store!
I have never heard of tortillas being heated up that way lol boyfriend just tosses them in a hot pan for a second. Your tacos look like they turned out dang good! Yum! I wanna try the jalapeno crunchies!
I love reading these, Stephanie. It really makes me laugh how you talk about Stephen. 🤣
I think it’s a new thing because they just started showing up a few months ago at our local Kroger! No idea why the instructions said to microwave them, but I hadn’t even considered pan frying them! The spice and flavor was so yummy!!!
Thank you so much, Hunida! I’m so happy that someone’s enjoying these as much as I am to write them! He keeps me entertained pretty well 😂 I know I drive him crazy when I fudge some of the ingredients! Haha.
