How My August 2022 Went

Hi, friends!

Happy September!

Since I dropped the ball again on blogging, I figured designated these monthly posts will guarantee at least one post from me to liven things up. I’ll share what I did in August, and hopefully I’ll have a couple other posts to share in between these monthly posts starting in September.

These posts will include things such as my posts of that month, any fun outings or activities, orders/purchases I have made, and book hopefuls/what I’ve read that month.

I’m working on sharing more book reviews, which those will be separate posts, but I’ll sprinkle in a few thoughts about a book here, especially if I’m not planning on doing a book review post of it.

Since this is a long post, you can click on any of the listed things below and you’ll jump to them in the post!

Life Update

August 9: Mom FaceTimed Haley and me about how our dad was doing. The doctors think he may have cancer, but they’re still doing tests to confirm this and figure out which type he has. One doctor said lymphoma, which is what his mom had whenever she was alive. I plan on going to Kingsport more often once the test results and process starts to help out, and I will still update since it’s been so fun creating this post.

August 31: Since it’s the end of the month, nothing really new to report, aside from what you’re going to see! Work was dead for me this month, but it looks like it’ll pick back up next month. We’re going to an event at Cheekwood tomorrow and Darby may get to play with Spud over the weekend.

Daily Life

August was packed with so many fun things! Despite the circumstance, I’m glad I got to make an unplanned trip to visit my family.

August 6: While Stephen enjoyed his time at the races that were happening downtown, I hung out at the apartment and enjoyed some Chinese takeout. I treated myself to some China Panda, and I had enough leftovers to last me for several meals.

I ordered some egg rolls, Hunan Beef, and House Special Chow Mei Fun. I always get the HSCHM, but I also wanted to get something different. I thought I would make the most out of this order, since Stephen doesn’t really like Chinese food, and buy a second entrée! It did not disappoint. The best part? Water chestnuts!!

August 7: I follow a corgi on Instagram who lives in Nashville and the owners invited me to some corgi meet-ups. There was one that was a birthday party the day before, but I couldn’t make it.

I was hesitant about going because it’s been rainy, and, due to my car accident that happened in the rain, I try to stay in whenever it pours. Luckily the rain had ceased and it was lightly raining on this day.

I was a tad bit anxious about taking Darby to a meet-up because I was unsure about how many dogs would be there. He’s pretty tame overall, but I did worry about him getting overwhelmed and snap at another dog. Though I think he’s learned that lesson since it didn’t end well for him whenever he did that to a dog that’s twice his size. I still get a little nervous, but he gets along well with the dog now and he loves making new friends!

Darby and I ended up getting there a little after 4:00 PM. I was anxious since he saw a Dalmatian in the parking lot and was barking his head off in the car. That was the last time he ended up barking though!

One dog was already at the Sandbar, a cute little Dachshund named Daisy that was 6 years old. She was unsure about dogs, so she was more reserved. The corgi, Birdy, that invited us showed up next, and Darby was lovestruck!

Birdy’s owners said that they’ve never seen her this comfortable with another dog before, and I’d say the feeling was mutual with them!

He followed her everywhere. It was so cute! Whenever he wanted to play, he’d start stamping his little paws and hopping around. I’ve never seen him play like this before. We’ve since learned that this is his flirting technique. He was trying to be a little too friendly with her a few times, which was also a first and a little embarrassing, but Birdy’s owners were so nice and chill about it.

Darby was showing off his moves to impress his new lady friend.

I wished he would’ve played with other dogs that wanted to give him attention, but he seemed to have eyes for only Birdy! Literally, it was Birdy and that’s all he would pay attention to! When they say following you around like a lost puppy, that was Darby with Birdy.

Poor Peanut was trying to be friends with Darby, but Darbs was too focused on his girl.

Whenever Birdy and her owners left, Darby was so focused on finding her! It was kind of sad because he kept going back and forth trying to find her.

Safe to say, his first corgi meet-up was a huge success! There were at least 10 corgis and some Dachshunds there. We stayed until almost 7:00 PM. I’m so happy his “singles’ night” was a success! Haha

Him on the car ride back:

August 8-11: My sister (Haley) and her husband (Reece) visited us for a few days! They wanted to have a little getaway before my thing got too crazy for them. My sister is going back to school, and they’re in the process of having their house built. Other places were out of their budget, so they decided to visit us!

On the day they arrived, I cooked dinner. We had a pork loin I bought from Kroger with cooked veggies: zucchini, bell peppers, and onions. For dessert, we went to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream.

I ordered the single with a waffle cone bowl. The guy misheard me and he gave me the salted peanut butter instead of the salty caramel, but it worked out because I did want to try that flavor eventually. It paired well with my coffee flavor, so all was good!

There was a tricolor corgi there, and it was adorable! Her name was Whiskey(sp?) and she was 8 months old.

Later that night, I made Darby an Instagram since his corgi friends started following my blog Instagram. I figured they solely wanted Darby content, so I finally made one!

On the 9th Haley and Reece went downtown and explored, then they picked me up and we went to the Green Hills Mall to shop (mostly browse). I bought two summer tank tops and a shirt from American Eagle for $8 and $15! We were craving some cinnamon rolls, so we bought some at Cinnabon.

Once Stephen got off work, we had dinner at Sakura. For once, I only ordered sushi instead of getting an entree. I’m not one of those people that can solely eat sushi for dinner. I feel like the dinner is missing something and I need a noodle dish or something else with substance. Next time, I will definitely order a noodle or rish dish with sushi.

On the 10th Haley, Reece, and I went to the One Bellevue shopping center. I had leftovers; they ate at PDK Kitchen. Then, it was coffee time! I ordered a seasonal drink, an iced Wake Up San Francisco, and it was so good! Mine was sweet. Haley ordered just an iced caramel latte, but it wasn’t sweet enough for her. Since purchasing my cold brew and espresso maker, I’ve been wanting to try some of The Well’s coffee beans! I didn’t know which blend to get, so I took a gamble and chose one, and it is amazing! My coffees at home are almost as good as theirs.

Continuing on the 10th, we went to a Nashville Sounds baseball game! Reece is a huge baseball fan, and this was the first time we all went to a game. The Sounds won, 2-1. Each team only scored during the first inning, but we were in the foul ball zone and that got us all a little on edge and paying attention.

Kingsport Trip!

Due to the unexpected family news, Darby and I ended up going back with Haley and Reece to Kingsport to spend time with our family on the following Thursday, the 11th. Darby was reunited with Pepper, so he was still a happy pup!

We stayed with Haley and Reece, and pictured below is their dog Sushie who was a bit afraid of us. Haha. I’ve met Susie several times, but I think Darby scared her at first because of his size and the loudness of his bark.

“Mom, I’m scared.”

The following day, they became best friends! Susie was even flirting with him.

At my parents’ house, Darby and Pepper kept each other company and ran around outside.

On Friday, the 12th, my mom, sister, brother, and nephew had their hair cut, so we all joined them. For dinner, we ordered from Huey Magoo’s. Evidently this was the franchise’s first Tennessee location! How nifty.

I felt like I needed to eat a little healthier after consuming a bunch of noodles, so I ordered a salad. We had also walked our dogs at our old high school. I accidentally left my phone at home, so I don’t have photos of that outing.

On Saturday, the 13th, Nick and Levi came to the house for a bit. Haley and Reece picked up Bagel Exchange for lunch. I had been craving this bagel! I remember there being more salmon, but it still hit the spot.

On Sunday, the 14th, my big sister, Callie, celebrated her 31st birthday. We had a few family members that weren’t immediate family stop by for some pizza, cookie cake, death by chocolate, and ice cream. A little after 2:00 PM Stephen and I headed back to Nashville.

We were craving coffee, so we made a coffee run and went to Scooter’s! Darby really enjoyed his pup cup. The drive back wasn’t too bad. We stopped by Kroger and picked up some necessary lunch stuff for Stephen and had their sushi for dinner.

Back in Nashville

August 16: Darby’s birthday! Darby’s friend Birdy’s pawrents invited us to their house so the pups could play and celebrate. The day before we stopped by some pet stores and bought a dog pie for Darby and Birdy to share. Not wanting to show up empty-handed for the humans, Stephen and I ordered a bundt cake and brought some ice cream for them.

Nothing Bundt Cake – Red Velvet

I only ate ice cream, but everyone else had some cake. We ended up having like 2/3 of it left, so we gave it to some of our friends here at the apartment.

Unintentionally, Darby made a splash and fell into the pool! At least we know that he can swim, and he did really well!

I shared most of the videos I recorded, but here are some more:

Birdy’s pawrents were so kind to have us over! Once we got back, Darby’s friend Spud visited him and gave him a present!

August 20: Birdy and her pawrents came over briefly on this Saturday. They were going to TJ Maxx at the time and wanted to get a small playdate in. Unfortunately, they only played for about 20 minutes because it started to rain. We didn’t take any photos, but it was so nice of them to want to have them play again so soon!

August 27: Stephen suggested taking a hike at Timberland Park. At first, I was unsure since it’s been so hot out, but I’m glad we went because it was a nice day!

We went to Kroger to pick up some lunch to eat when we got there.

While putting Darby in the car, he jumped into the driver’s seat—the car was off—and he looked so cute and proud!

We haven’t taken him many places, but he did so well and enjoyed himself.

He wanted to stick his nose in everything, so that day and the next few he had a lot of discharge. We only saw one dog on the trail, but he liked exploring!

We got home and he was knocked out. I’d say it was a successful trip.

August 28:I went to Clarksville to spend the day with her since it was her off day. We went to Blakhorse Pub & Brewery for lunch, Dutch Bros. for coffee, the mall and browsed a few other places, bought some clothes at Kohl’s, went back to her apartment, and ordered from Chopsticks for dinner.

We originally wanted to eat at Yellowtail for lunch, but they’re closed on Sundays.

The Crispy Brussels appetizer was so good! They were the perfect amount of crispiness and sweetness. They weren’t super sweet but had a subtle taste. I was really craving a Greek salad again, so I ordered one and added blackened chicken.

This was my first Dutch Bros. trip. I ordered an iced Golden Eagle, and it was really good! I’d definitely go back and order another one. The cups are huge!

I didn’t take any photos of our food from Chopsticks, but we might like it more than Dragon King. My Singapore Noodles were super similar to my Curry Basil Noodles.

Books

The books I checked out from the library and read this month:

  • Our Crooked Hearts by Melissa Albert
    • themes: witchcraft, young adult fiction, paranormal, fantasy
    • tw: animal sacrifice
    • rating: 3.5 stars | Not my cup of tea, but it was interesting. Wrapped up quickly. Wasn’t super invested in the storyline, so I didn’t feel satisfied or super happy finishing it.
  • More Than You’ll Ever Know by Katie Gutierrez
    • themes: true crime, mystery
    • rating: 3.5 stars
      • Way too long. It’s over 400 pages! Sprinkled in are some Spanish and historical events. Some phrases I knew; others I had to look up, which added to my dimming interest. I found the two female main characters to be unlikeable as the book continued.
  • Searching for Silvie Lee by Jean Kwok
    • themes: racism, mystery, Chinese and Dutch culture, identity
    • rating: 4
      • Really quick read. Loved learning about the Chinese and Dutch culture. Distinct voices that distinguished each character when using idioms and cultural sayings. A character came off creepy, which was a misinterpretation. I enjoyed the mystery. Identity was a huge moving part in this story for everyone.
  • Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson
    • themes: young adult, romance, summer vacation
    • rating: 3
      • A few typos, lots of unnecessary commas. The female protagonist is 17 and she’s guilt-ridden over something she did when she was 12 years old. Wasn’t sure if I was going to like the ex-boyfriend or ex-best friend because the whole situation was underwhelming and overdramatic, which I guess is expected when you’re 17 and forced to confront people you ran away from.
        • I felt too old for this book because it was super dramatic in a child’s lens. I probably would’ve loved it if I read it whenever it was published in 2012.
        • A little tough for me to read since her dad is dying from pancreatic cancer and only had 4 months to live.
  • What Might Have Been by Holly Miller
  • themes: romance, chick lit
  • tw: unconfirmed SA and non-consensual drug use
  • rating: 4
    • Just learned that this book is considered a Sliding Door theme, so that’s cool. The timelines split and sections are labeled as “Stay” and “Go,” when Lucy decided to stay in Shoreley—where she works on her novel, falls in love with Caleb—or go to London—advance in her career, fall in love with Max all over again.
      • I really didn’t like where one of the timelines went, but I love what-if books and seeing how our actions can make such a big difference. Some elements were in both timelines; others went in different directions. Wanted one truth to be revealed that wasn’t in one timeline, but it was a decent story.

I’ve only seen SCS shared on bookstagram. I was excited about the others and went into them with no expectations. This month I read the least amount of books due to everything going on.

Orders

Succulents Box

August 1: I had some gift cards from Succulents Box still, so I spent it on three succulents and eight more pots, which was super unnecessary since I have a lot, but that means I need more succies to fill them! They arrived in rough condition, but I’ll have fun nursing them back to health.

I bought another Graptoveria Debbie because the mealybugs invaded the first one I had. This one is super etiolated and will need lots of care.

I ordered two sets of pots1 large white, blue, and pink; 1 small white, blue, and pinkand two other pots. I didn’t realize the separate large and small pots were the same as in the set because they were titled differently, but I don’t mind getting more blue pots!

Ulta

August 4: My Ulta ordered arrived. I was running low on my facial cleansers and ran out of lip shimmer, so it was time to place another skincare order! I typically order products every two or three months, so the price evens out since they last for a while.

The repeat products are the Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, Acne Deep Pore Cleansing Wash, and the Scar Gel. Ulta tends to have deals on products. This time is was BOGO 1/2, which is what sold me on trying the Acne Oil-Control Matte Moisturizer.

I used to buy the Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer, but I didn’t want to keep spending $10 a tube, so I’m trying the Moisturizing Lip Balm, which is a little over $5. I mainly wanted some type of balm to give color to my lips, which this don’t but now I know. This one smells like a Cabbage Patch Kid.

FabFitFun

August 14: My fall box from FabFitFun arrived a little later, but an add-on, the Javy Coffee Concentrate, arrived separately! If only it had come a few days earlier though. I tried taking my cold brew with me, but the pitcher spilled over in my bag, so none of it was saved! 🙁

I first came across Javy on Instagram. Since I’ve been making my own cold brew and espresso, I wanted to try this coffee concentrate.

I first tried it with milk as the base liquid. It tastes like a mocha latte. My next try was with water, which made it taste like normal cold brew. Overall, it was pretty good! I’ll need to adjust the ratio, but I like it and I’d buy again. It has a thicker consistency than I expected, but I’m enjoying it.

August 22: My fall box officially arrived! These are my selections:

My add-ons:

I couldn’t resist the chance to try more Earth Harbor products at such great prices! I’ve been using their Marina product since last year and my summer box had a glow mask by the company that is really nice.

The cable organizer clip is for Stephen, and the box contained a surprise product of eyedrops. I just recently started buying add-ons, but I probably need to cool it!

I was debating on ordering the dryer balls a couple of months ago for sustainability reasons but was hesitant about it, especially since I read that they made a lot of noise in the dryer. I’m glad I waited! I’ve used them once so far while washing the bed sheets. The thumping isn’t as noticeable, but I did place the dryer balls underneath the sheets, which might have made a difference.

Etsy

August 29: A Variegated Echeveria Monroe has been on my wish list ever since seeing a listing of one from a succulent seller I love. However, there was no way I could shell out $350 for one. I’m linking it here because it’s absolutely gorgeous.

If I had the money, I would buy this one immediately because its coloring is pure magic and absolutely stunning!

I found an Etsy shop that was selling one for a little more than half the price of the one above—and it was on sale!—so I could not resist! I know, I told myself to not spend this much money on a succulent, but believe me, I’ve searched everywhere and haven’t found many Var. Echeveria Monroes sellers. This is legit a rare succulent, and I would be so upset with myself if I let it get away.

I still cannot believe I was able to get this!

There’s a Korean seller that sells variegated succulents that I’ve had my eyes on, but considering the ship time (which could take up to 30 days!) and the shipping cost (I added a few to my cart and the shipping alone is $55), buying from a U.S. seller is the best option for me. This way, I don’t have to worry if it’ll die in transit or lose its variegation in the process. It’s a shame since their prices are way lower than what they’re selling in the States.

August 29: I also found a Variegated Graptoveria Debbie, which is another ultra rare succulent. I tried holding back on getting it since the Variegated Monroe was such a big purchase. After giving it some thought, and realizing how these don’t show up often, I ended up buying it right before bed the same day I purchased the Var. Monroe.

It arrived on this date, and it’s absolutely gorgeous!

The colors are so stunning. I would’ve immensely regretted it if I didn’t buy this one. The seller had another one for a little less and a smaller size, but it was nowhere near as vibrant as this one.

Safe to say, this concludes my major spending for the rest of the yeah, haha. The rest of my spending will be on Christmas gifts. I’ve been buying here and there, but I hope to purchase more and finish before December.

That’s All!

August felt like a long month, but it was a good one. I’m hoping the next few months will be positive. The last half of the month slowed down and the weather has gotten somewhat cooler. I’m so ready for fall! I’ve been saying that the second it hit above 75 degrees, haha.

Also, Taylor Swift announcing a new album is a fantastic way to conclude this month. I can hardly wait for it! I sense I’ll be writing a lot more poetry once it’s released.

Since this post was uber long, I might break it up into two parts the next time if I have an eventful month. If you read all of this post, thank you so much! You deserve a reward for sticking around, haha.

How was your August? What was your favorite August moment?

A 28-year-old seeking to live a thousand lives. Blogging and writing about some things that I love, which include succulents, books and music, and what I've been up to while living in Nashville, TN.

  1. OMG Stephanie, hiiiiiiii!!!!! I thought maybe you disappeared forever like our friend Hunida So glad to have an update from you.

Sorry to hear about your dad and I sure hope you get some good news about his health.

Loved all the Corgi photos and videos. That one where Birdy is pushing him into the pool is priceless! Too bad we don’t have the entire thing. Glad he was able to swim and get out ok. So cute he is, with all his various doggo friends.

    His little car hammock!!!!

The scared little dog hiding behind her mama!!!

Love your book review format. Short & sweet and to the point. I am not a fan of book reviews that are almost as long as the dang book and tell me way too much information. Also, I’ve been obsessed with outline formatting since I learned how to do it in 7th grade.

That being said, I *do* love super long blog posts like this one so you don’t need to break them up as far as I’m concerned, and yes I read the entire thing, although I may have skimmed through the makeup and plants just because they are not my thing. Ha ha.

Of course I’m drooling over ALL the food and drinks.

I hope you have a great September!

    1. Hi, Jinjer!! Thank you for welcoming me back! I’ve been mostly lurking cand catching up with some posts, but I’m trying to get back into the blogging habit. I’ve drafted some posts, but I haven’t shared anything in months! I’ve caught some of your posts but haven’t read any recent ones yet!

Thank you! We’re waiting on test results that will come in next week. He’s been so positive, and I’m glad his spirits haven’t been broken.

The video of Birdy pushing Darby into the pool is our absolute favorite one! I’m so happy that it was partially captured. We watched it several times in a row and couldn’t stop laughing.

I have some book reviews that are lengthy, so you can skip those when I share them! 😂 I’m with you, I’d like them to be a medium length, but I find myself rambling!

And same here. I figured outlining would be a good break in my post and more appealing for white space and organization.

Thank you for your feedback on this new format I’m trying out! I’m all over the place, so I’m glad that some topics that I shared held your attention!

Thank you; I hope your September is great, and I look forward to catching up and reading what you’ve been up to!

  2. Yay! A recent post! 😀

Sorry to hear about your dad’s diagnosis. I hope the treatment ends up working. Sending lots of love to you and your whole family during this difficult time.

OMG that corgi meet up! So cute! My dog barks at every single dog she sees and it sucks because I feel like she wouldn’t do too well if I let her loose at a dog park 🙁 we’ve only attempted it with people we know very well and their dogs and that went well but we still try to be very careful, so no friends for her in the meantime since my husband’s ex co-worker moved to the beach, she got along well with their three dogs too so that was a bummer. It’s nice to hear that his first meet up went well and that he met a lady dog he likes LOL.

It’s so great that despite the circumstances, you were still able to spend time with your family and go out to eat and enjoy your time together. <3 All that food looks delicious! I have been eating food both homecooked and take out and I've been eating to my hearts content because it feels like it has been a minute since I feel like I enjoyed a meal LOL. Now I gotta start working out and loose some lbs lol.

OMG Darby on his birthday! Cutie! My fur baby's birthday was also in August. I didn't get to take too many photos either, I tried because I got her a cute little dress LOL. I did not realize you had made Darby an instagram, so I'll be sure to follow it when I log back in 🙂
On the other hand, hiking with pets is so wonderful! They also get a good walk in. Mine not only loves to be outdoors (except when it rains, she hates it) but we found out she's a pretty good hiker. She can climb uneven boulders 🙂

Despite not blogging very much this part, you have definitely made up for it by reading so many books! I have not read a single book all year and it makes me a bit sad, but on the other hand, I've read some comics, I hope that counts LOL.
Hopefully with more freetime, I'm able to read more often too 🙂

Oh wow so many succulents! That rare one sure is pretty, I don't blame you! When I see something rare I tend to jump at the chance to get it as well, because we've beaten ourselves up for not getting something sooner LOL

I would love to see you do a post with ALL of your succulents, even if you have to split it into several blog posts because I definitely want to see all the ones you have. I am hoping to start doing research on plants that can survive in my apartment, so once spring time comes around, I can start buying them and decorating this place and making it look a lot more homier 🙂

This was so much fun catching up, I hope to see you this month too or much sooner than the end of the month 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! It means a lot. It’s a waiting game now, but hopefully he’ll get an appointment with an oncologist soon and take some next steps.

Aw, I hope Tsuki can make more friends! When we first got Darby, he would sometimes bark at dogs out of excitement to meet them. It’s weird because he wouldn’t every time whenever he saw one. I looked up ways to break him of it and always carried treats around or didn’t let him meet another dog if he barked. He still will bark occasionally, but he’s made progress! I’m surprised he didn’t bark during the meet up.

We’re planning on going to another one tomorrow even though it’s predicted to rain. 🙃

Also, I’m not sure if you live an apartment complex, but we do and Darby sees a dog almost daily. He may be exposed to them more than Tsuki, so that has also helped him with training.

We don’t get takeout much, but we did splurge on our trip visiting family! I’ve been trying to exercise as well to get into shape but haven’t really changed my eating habits. I need to prepare to wear jeans again and I don’t want to buy new ones. 😂

Darby was slowing down, and so was I, so it was a good walk for him. It is fun taking them on hikes! Although, it makes me stress out a little, but we’ll try to take him on more hikes. That seems really cool that Tsuki can climb on uneven boulders!

I’ve definitely upped my reading game this year! Having a library card definitely helped. I have so many books on my shelves that I’m ignoring, haha. I hope you find some good books to read. Comics definitely count, I think!

Yes, that’s exactly it! It was too good of a deal to pass up, so I took that as a sign to get them both! I actually am planning on making a huge post of my succulents, so I’m excited to share it whenever I do!

I don’t know about other house plants, but if you have any questions about succulents, I can try to help!

I hope your September is starting off well! I need to go and catch up on some of your posts that I’ve missed! 🙂

      1. I hope that it goes well for him! Sending lots of love your way!

I’m not entirely sure what’s up with my dog lol but she learned to bark back at other dogs because all the dogs in our apartment complex are not nice lol. I need a trainer to know for sure. I don’t want to assume. We took her to the dog park and she barked, lunged and pulled the entire tome it was exhausting mentally and physically not gonna lie lol

Oh I know it’s started getting colder here in the mornings so I am not looking forward to wearing jeans again lol.

Well I’m sure for him walks would be better than hiking anyway. Sometimes hiking trails have foxtails nearby and you never know when the dogs will get those on them as well. A walk is safer lol

Ah yeah I have to check my library card because I’m pretty sure I owe a hefty fee from before the pandemic lol

I’m excited for those posts then I cannot wait!

        1. Thank you! 🙂 He has an oncology appointment this Tuesday. 🤞🏼

Aw, I can imagine the frustration! Trying to battle your dog while they’re pulling is incredibly draining. It’s what makes me hesitate taking Darby to restaurants and such.

It seems we’re experiencing a hot week again, so it’s hot and humid again. If cold weathers means mosquitoes go away, I don’t mind wearing jeans, haha.

Darby saw a mole in some leaves last night and wanted to play with it. I was so confused and worried that it was a snake until I saw it scurry, haha.

Oh no, I hope the fee isn’t much!

I hope your week is starting off well, Rossy! ♥

Do you have anything to add?
